Holiday - Cape Town XLIX

About to wrap up from all my pics from the holiday. This one I really took of the car, but in the background you can see the new sports arena being built for that football thing that is taking place next year.

Holiday - Cape Town XLVIII

Oh, and the last day we also went to Signal Hill. A grave oversight according to my friend, so she promptly took matters into her own hands and drove us there. Not to be missed. This my friends is Cape Town in all its glory.

Holiday - Cape Town XLVII

No 18 on the waiters list, but No 1 on mine.

Holiday - Cape Town XLVI

On the last day my friend took us to a great place just in the middle of Cape Town, where we had a view of the sea and where I had my last strawberry Marguerita (well I did have one in the airport too, but that doesn't count, does it?). Goodlooking guy, ain't it?

Holiday - Cape Town XLV

And at least one of us dared to confront the Atlantic ocean.

Holiday - Cape Town XLIV

Somebody said they didn't want to go to South Africa because the beaches were not nice. Well, I don't know about the rest of the country but I can assure you that the beaches in Cape Town are fab. The only issue is that the water holds a temperature of no more than 14°C, brrrr!

Holiday - Cape Town XLIII

Oh, and I forgot that we went to look at the penguins in Simonstown.

Holiday - Cape Town XLII

The last four nights we were living in luxury. A two bed-room apartment, well over 100 m2 with balcony. Because we're worth it.

Holiday - Cape Town XLI

A sunny city so near the ocean can offer loads of great seafood and fresh salads. Fab food!

Holiday - Cape Town XL

That evening we came back to Cape Town, and had to find a place to stay. Since we were quite late it turned out not to be so easy. Most B&B's had no receptions, and we couldn't get hold of anybody. Eventually we were lucky, and ended up paying next to nothing for a old but clean room with a shower, breakfast included. Exactly what we needed since we were leaving early the next morning. I tell you. It was only the last 4 days we had no plans. There were so much to see, so much to do, so every morning we had to get up early. Well early-ish...

Holiday - Cape Town XXXIX

The same day we had time for a quick visit to Kirstenbosch - a botanical garden - where we met Bagheera. I actually watched the Jungle book movie on the flight home, which I hadn't seen in many, many years. Still funny.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXVIII

The next day it was time for Seal island, and some fishermen.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXVII

One vineyard we were visiting was called Buitenverwachting. When they tried to sell this wine in Asia they failed miserably, mostly due to that nobody could pronounce it. In America they had more success. The yankies simply renamed it to "Bite-me-for-watching". Clever.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXVI

While doing the wine cellar tour the guide told us that baboons had destroyed 10% of their crop. I asked naturally if they had broken into the wine cellar, at which time Bro visualized. He asked "did you really think the baboons broke in, had a glass of wine and a cigar?". Hmmm, maybe not. The baboons had eaten 10% of the grapes. Ok, so sometimes I don't think before I speak. But wouldn't it have been funnier?

Holiday - Cape Town XXXV

In Stellenbosch we stayed in what they claimed to be the oldest hotel in South Africa. It was ok, but we were not there much and the breakfast did not match the one we had at the B&B in Franschhoek.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXIV

In Stellenbosch we ended up at Delheim, where we enjoyed a very fine cheese plate. Funnily enough the winetasting session was hosted by a German. Hmmm.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXIII

After Franschhoek we stopped by for a few glasses in Stellenbosch, another and more well-known wine area, where they were a bit more flamboyant. Everything for the tourists.

Holiday - Cape Town XXXII

Read and weap. 180 rand is about 22 Swiss francs or 19 US$. For 6 bottles!

Holiday - Cape Town XXXI

In Franschhoek there are plenty of B&B's and we chose to stay in one of the guesthouses, hosted by a nice lady. Breakfast in the morning (incl in the very decent price) consisted of whatever you wanted, made in the kitchen to your liking.
Here's Bro studying the map (he re-discovered that I'm useless when it comes to finding my way) and the lemon trees in the garden.
One disappointment on the trip, not so much to me but to Bro, was that he was reading in the paper that one of the top 50 restaurants in the world (!) was just around the corner from where we stayed. Of course we went there, but not surprisingly it was fully booked. Le Quartier Français.

Holiday - Cape Town XXX

In order not to appear too alcoholic, we decided to do a tour to learn about wine-making. It sounded a lot like grapes bla-bla-bla harvesting bla-bla-bla handpicked bla-bla-bla to me. But the results are shown here. Kinda wish I had a wine-cellar.

Holiday - Cape Town XXIX

Spittoon, ever heard of it? I hadn't. And I can honestly say that I never thought I would need one. It's a thingy you spit out wine in. Now, why would anybody want to do that?
Hmmm, but after tasting wine at 11 in the morning (because most wine farms close at 5 pm - which indeed is strange in itself - and you want to do as many as you possibly can per day) after recovering from food poisoning it did turn out to be a handy device. Shame on me!

Holiday - Cape Town XXVIII

There really are some great places where you can taste wine around Cape Town. I am sorry we didn't have more time. Really.
