Trouble to let go

I have a cousin who has two teenage daughters. Time to let them go and do their own thing is my opinion, not his. When I say, "let them discover, find out, meet the wrong boys, do what they need to do in order to develop and grow" he says "Never! They need guidance and parents who care". I don't think anybody is in the wrong here, but I love arguing :)... PS. I do hope that he has not developed into this overprotecting parent because he knows me :)

Dear cousin,

the daughter of a former neighbor was stabbed to death in May, by her boyfriend (both probably on drugs). She was 17.

A couple of weeks ago a young boy, Riccardo, from a well to do family in Stockholm, was beaten and kicked to death, one day before turning 17, by a gang of 3-5 boys, following an argument at a party. Our youngest daughter knew him from a language course in France this summer....

Sexual assault and rape is everyday news in the paper. Join me for an evening with "parents on the town" to see young kids stoned and I belive you would have a different view about letting go!

Medical research shows that the brain is not completely developed until you are past 20 (although some brains seem to never develop completely ;-)), so there are reasons that some parents care. If you talk to young kids, there are in fact many of them wishing that their parents would care a bit more.

Trust me, as a parent, you do not want to see your children dead before you do, or even unnecessarily hurt. However they should learn that life is both rough and tough and you can be certain that they get their share of that as well.

So.... this was not to argue, just to give you some concerning facts. Another fact is that we now only have one teenage daughter. The oldest, no longer a teenager, is in Australia studying and doing well on her own.

By the way, support "Bevara oss från gatuvåldet" ("Save us from Street violence") at facebook founded in memory of the young boy Riccardo.

Best regards from
Your old and experienced cousin

Of course I do not promote street violence, but discovering the world on your own is part of growing up.

Regarding developing of the brain, I couldn't agree more. Some people never learn...;)
