Zürifäscht!

Yesterday, Zürich, Zürifäscht. An event that takes place every three years. Big party, carnival-style, food and drink stands everywhere, people partying. And the weather complied, 25°C and fab everything.

Even my friend, who claims my place in the city is shite, had a good time dancing to the music. And so did his friends. Everybody dancing, having fun and partying.

Next time it's street parade, and that's a whole month from now!

Best before again

I saw a consumer show, and learned that the best before date on eggs is calculated on eggs being kept in room temperature. When storing them in the fridge, like most people do, you can keep them a whole month longer. Amazing.

And I must admit I haven't had a bad egg in decades, I mean when opening a raw egg to use for cooking or baking. I guess science has gone forward, even though, as discussed before, the chicken probably has it worse.

I am planning to once splash out on a happy chicken, well I guess at least happy until it was executed, and cook it to see if I find a difference in taste.

Maybe I'll make it a test. Get some friends together, cook a normal chicken and a happy one, and see if we can tell the difference. Yes, that's what I'll do.

Duck race

Once in a while there is a duck race taking place in Zürich. You buy a duck, not a live one, and it is put into the river racing some 10,000 other ducks. It's an event for charity, but it does attract a lot of visitors.

You can either have it sent to your place to paint it (best painted duck wins a price) or have the organizers put the duck in the water for the race if you cannot be there yourself. One duck costs 10 francs, which most people can afford. I'm planning on splashing out this year, and buying a pair of ducks, thus forking out 20 francs.

I'm thinking of naming them Zina and Zetti :).

Best before

No, I'm not referring to myself, but my neighbour, when she goes on vacation she usually leaves me the food that won't last until she's back. Today it was a bunch of tomatoes, some cheese, ham and two big containers of nature yogurt, which I'm still not sure what to do with. Not a fan of nature yogurt.

Anyway, had a guest for lunch today and he got served with grilled tomatoes with cheese on top, rolled ham slices with wasabi and some homemade parmesan bread I had in the freezer.

He was intrigued about the wasabi, and so I showed him the bottle so he'd knew what it looked like. That's when I noticed 'best before July 2012'. Oops!

It's a nice guy, and I really hope I haven't poisoned him. On the other hand, I know that food companies are forced to put an end date to their products, and that it's not always necessary.

For example, I found some Läkerol at my aunts place once, where best-before was 10 years earlier. They tasted quite all right.

Software something

I got a phone call yesterday on my land line. Except for a few close relatives and friends, nobody ever uses that line. This time it was a guy who spoke English, which is unusual here in Zürich.

He presented himself as a representative from a company called Software something I cannot remember. I asked him again, and he said he was calling from HQ, like that would impress me.

When asking what he was selling, he said the service is for free, but his company picked up downloads on my computer that were viral. And he asked if I could go online so that he could show me what I needed to correct.

I might be blonde, but I'm not that stupid. I politely declined, and hung up.

Entering hell

I was out walking with my neighbour today. She has two kids. One is six months old and pure delight, always smiling and gurgling and never making a fuss. She was with us.

It was perfect walking weather, or strolling rather, and we were talking about all and nothing. And being in awe of how much has changed since we both came to Switzerland. Buildings, construction work everywhere. The city expanding (I guess since the city is so small, there is no space left) into former suburbs. Ten years ago it was a field, and now buildings are rising everywhere. Flats and offices. New tram lines and improved infrastructure. It's exciting!

At the end of our walk we were to pick up the other kid, who is the opposite of delight. She was in the kindergarten, and I made the mistake of going in there. Hell on earth. People working there should have the bonuses bank CEO's get I tell you. Screaming unruly kids. What a nightmare!

I am so glad I have cats instead. Sweet, furry and above all, quiet. I am very happy about the choices I made in life.

Angry aunt

My aunt called me yesterday. She is my mothers sister. If there is one person missing my Mum more than me, it is her.

So we share a lot of memories, a lot of stories, but even if she was close with my Mum they are/were different. Very different. My aunt has a sharp tongue, she's not ducking and she's provocative, even at the age of 82. My Mum wasn't. She was kind, always the mediator, she would have been a fantastic diplomat. Some people would probably say I'm more like my aunt.

Anyway, yesterday she was telling me "I find it funny that a person of your age do not work". HA! This from a woman who quit working when she was 18. Told her my reasons, and she came back with "I had a husband to take care of".

I didn't know where to start. And despite her shortcomings, I kinda like her. And we're always having good conversations about the old times. Lots of laughing.

Last time I flew out to see her at her 80th birthday, I got yelled at. So I won't be doing that again. But I'm not angry. She's her, and I'm me. And being relatives we are stuck with each other. And that ain't too bad.

Dishwasher liquid dispenser

I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's the tiny tap next to the water tap in the kitchen, dispensing dishwasher liquid. So instead of always having a plastic bottle standing next to the water tap, I chose to have it built-in so to speak.

I use it a lot. Cleaning the ashtrays, the cat bowls and also my hands once in a while. I guess I press for a portion of liquid maybe 5 times a day.

And now it broke.

It's pissing me off, I lived in my new and shiny flat for less than 4 years, and already something broke.

So I had to get my invoices out, to find out where the thingie came from. Franke. Which I also realized when looking at it, but the brand Franke is almost invisible, kinda printed into the tap. Nevermind.

I emailed them. First they couldn't find the product No that I got from my invoice. Many, many emails later including pictures they have figured it out, and asked if I wanted to order a new one. Yes.

144 francs excluding VAT. I find that very, very expensive for something that only lasted 4 years, which I told them in the last email. Predictably I haven't heard from them since.

The least they could do is to pay for the freight. And apologize profusely. Is it gonna happen? Of course not.

My wee ones

Two years ago to the day. I still remember how cautious they were, and how Zina was sick in the car. Now, two years later they own the place. You know what they say, dogs have owners, cats have staff. It is true.

Even though I'd like to think I'm in charge, I am very tuned into the needs of my wee ones.

Ok, I'm pretty strict when it comes to feeding, but when they choose to cuddle up to me, I cannot resist. Belly-scratching is their favourite. The fact that cat-hairs are flying around the apartment, I don't care, I am happy to use the Dyson every time.

Zina&Zetti, I cannot imagine a life without you!

Silence, and nothing but silence

I dunno, but I think I have some weird friends. Not weird, as in so-weird-I-don't-understand-you, but still weird.

But yes, thinking again, so-weird-I-don't-understand-it weird. At least one of them.

She went to a course. Not sure it's a course, as much as a camp of some kind.

She went there, checked in, and for 10 days she didn't speak. Nor did one of the other 70 (weirdos), who were also there.

One day zero (yeah I know, but that's what they call it), they are allowed to speak and share basic information, like what's your name. My friend shared a room with another woman, and in 10 days she only knew her name and that she liked to sleep with the window open at night.

I dunno but 40 women and 30 men (whereof three good-looking ones, I asked!), checking into a camp for 10 days, and none of them were speaking? I put my reputation on the line here, saying that's not normal. It's convent-like behaviour. But hey, I guess it's better with meditation than medication.

I myself prefer alcohol.

Picture this. 70 people sitting at tables having breakfast, lunch and dinner and none of them speak. Ten days in a row. I'm thinking Amish.

But hey, my friend thinks it helped her getting through some bad stuff she experienced lately, and she seemed very happy tonight. I guess we're all different. I just think you all should be different like I am :).

Oh I googled and found this. Not sure this is where she went, but apparently they are not after the money. You can pay as much or little as you want. Guess what I would've paid?

Midsummer dinner

I am happy to report that my foreign friends liked my kinda midsummer food. Well, with foreign I mean one Swiss and one Italian. Maybe I'm the odd one out.

But it's nice when most of the food goes, and I don't have to eat left-overs for too long.

Fan gone

I'm getting hooked on this selling things business. Today I sold my fan, that I had for like ten years. The last three years it's been occupying space in the basement, not being used at all.

I asked 50 francs for it, got one answer offering 35, and finally got 40 since she thought it was in such good condition. And it was, working perfectly. Now I'm thinking about all the other stuff I could sell. Exciting!

Politics

I really do not follow Swiss news and in particular politics that I should. I admit, I am lazy.

Today while walking with my friend, she told me that Switzerland once again has said no to America's request for information about bank accounts, and I felt a bit stupid 'cause I didn't know enough to have an opinion.

Bank secrecy I guess is good, but not good if it means protecting money-laundering gangsters and mafia.

My friend didn't have an opinion either, she was more talking about how impressed she was about Switzerland saying no to the US "this tiny spot on the map standing up to the most powerful country in the world". And I must admit, I felt proud too, even if I wasn't sure about the issue. And not being a Swiss (yet).

This evening I asked my Swiss friend and she explained that the people in charge were not properly informed about the issue at hand, and therefore she was against it too. I love Switzerland! I really do. They are so clever. They don't trust anybody, and until there is sufficient information they are never gonna say yes.

I'm still not entirely sure about the laws, but I have a feeling that suspicion of money-laundering is not gonna sit well with ze Swiss.

They may be slow, ze Swiss, but they are thorough, and they do not make a decision until properly informed and very, very sure.

I like that very much.

Folding phones

I was out walking with my neighbour again today. She likes shopping and I'd like to think it rubs off on me. But no.

Was in the Orange shop, looking for a new phone. And no, I'm not planning to upgrade just yet, it was more like 'should-my-current-phone-that-i-had-forever-break-down kinda-shopping'. The only phone that was folding was a tiny one, with a microscopic display and an even smaller keyboard. Yes but I like a folding phone, so that I know when it's closed or not. Having the name "Annika" means that you are many times first in the name list, and I cannot tell you how many "pocket calls" I've had.

Anyway, I find it interesting that phone producers do not direct their commercials towards people who can pay. Ok, I understand that having the newest and hottest release of iPhone is appealing to youngsters, but hey, who's paying? Yes I know, the curling parents.

I like a proper folding phone, but as long as my current one is working, I am not changing. After all, it's only like 7-8 years old. And it works fine!

Shoes yet again

So tomorrow is pick-up day for shoes and clothes. A few weeks in advance you get plastic bags with labels cleverly saying "shoes" and "clothes" on them, and the day before pick-up you put the bags on the street for the organization to pick them up the next day. Preferably with shoes and/or clothes in them.

I left this afternoon, and wasn't sure when I was gonna get back (and if I would remember) so put my shoe-bag on the street before leaving.

Coming back just now, I first noticed a woman totally clad in black, going through the neighbours bags, and then when approaching "my" house that my bag was nowhere to be seen.

Ah well, I guess the shoes went to somebody needy.

39°C

F, it's been hot the last couple of days. I feel like one of these over-bread dogs, that no longer have a proper nose to breath through, gasping for air.

Today it was up to 39°C on my balcony. If you go out, and consequently move, you're sweating. The only relief comes when sitting completely still at home, no windows or doors open, and feet planted on the cold stone floor. Only that gets boring in the end.

So I thought rather than continue to complain, since we waited so long for summer this year, I'll make myself a frosty drink.

Real sweat Swiss strawberries, crushed ice and a forgotten bottle of Koskenkorva strawberry. Yummie!

Shoe guy

Continuing on the theme of today, shoes. Remember him? Turns out he has 12 pairs of these kinda shoes, and altogether around 20 pairs.

Earlier today I was asking another male friend of mine how many shoes he has. He said 15. But when probing it turned out to be more like 20.

So, me being a woman, now have 15 pairs of shoes. I'm never gonna be an Imelda Marcos!

But I wonder, is a peculiar interest in Japanese whiskey connected with these type of shoes? There must be a study somewhere!

More shoes

The shoe story reminded me of South Africa. Included in my 15 pair of shoes are 4 pairs of flip-flops. The most expensive ones I bought in Cape Town.

They are a pair of high-heel flip-flops (yes I know, sounds ridiculous), but more plateau than heel. I saw them on display in a window, fairly expensive, but at the time it seemed like a good idea.

When I was at the counter paying for them, I was snottily informed that the price was for one shoe! I was so flabbergasted I just paid up (double) and left the shop. Naturally I was identified as a stupid tourist (which I was) and taken advantage of.

Therefore I shall forever keep these shoes to remind me that also I, strange as it sounds, can make mistakes:).

Shoes

Today I cleaned my shoe cupboard, which was, to be perfectly honest, long overdue. Dirty, dusty and in dire need of organization.

I don't think I have many shoes, but nevertheless, was planning to give away some, since there is a shoe and clothes pick-up day next week.

I ended up filling a whole bag to give away! Interesting. I cannot understand where all these shoes came from.

So now I have some 15 pairs of shoes, including two pairs of party shoes that I hardly use, but since they are almost new, I decided to keep them.

Also, I found jogging shoes that I remember buying quite a few years ago (5-6 years?) with the intent of if not jogging, so power-walking. Haha. I think I used them once. But hey, I kept them, who knows? Maybe one day...

Fish lips

Had a friend over tonight for dinner, and finally, finally, finally we were able to eat on the balcony. Very hot today, up to 30°C. Very nice and relaxing out there.

So my friend told me he had a bike accident some time ago, where the helmet prevented him from a crushed skull, but not from a crushed lip. Luckily enough the incident took place just outside a doctors office. Neat!

For a while he walked around looking like this. And yes, he's still single :).

Pfizer

Although I have a great interest in money, I am not that interested in investments. I like my money to grow (who doesn't?), but I don't want to spend a lot of time contemplating about it. And it's not the money in itself, it's what you can do with it.

The other day I got a letter from my bank with an offer "bla-bla-bla-bla-bla, yes we think you should do it"-kinda information. Earlier, I left all these papers and decisions with my brother, and did what I was told, but these days he is less interested in helping me. Or busy occupying Bulgaria.

So I had to read the letter myself. It said my bank was strongly recommending the investment. Apparently Pfizer is selling off one of its pieces of business, involving medicine for animals and veterinary care. My interest immediately peaked. And seeing how people are richer and more inclined to invest in their pets (including me) I jumped at the offer. And so sent the letter of consent in.

Today I got another letter, saying the bank had changed its mind and now the offer is only valid until the 14th of this month, and maybe you should be a bit careful jumping on the ship.

First of all, I thought it was unprofessional of the bank. Second, I thought ok, I sent the consent letter in already and there is little chance I can reply and get my letter recognized in two days, so decided to go with the flow.

Was surprised when I got a call this afternoon, having a brand new bank advisor, who I haven't spoken to before, call me and ask me how I wanted to do.

In the end I decided to invest half of the shares in the animal business. Because I really do believe in the idea, I just don't know how this particular business is run. And lazy as I am, I can't be arsed to find out before it's too late.

Fingers crossed now.

Blondes have more fun

...or at least it doesn't show when you're getting old. A couple of months ago I noticed that my hair on the sides looked a bit silvery. Not grey mind you, but slightly more silvery shiny than the rest of my hair. Yes, I do prefer silver to grey.

Nobody has commented on it yet, probably because it's difficult to see when dry. Good so.

Then I started to sweat at night. Waking up, being very hot. Not hot like in it being 30°C outdoors, but nevertheless hot-hot.

When making an excruciating effort, say like turning around in bed, I started to sweat like a pig (do pigs sweat?).

Yes I do believe it's here. Welcome menopause. About friggin time!

I'm a Mammon type of person

So we were sitting on the balcony, sipping a drink and eating sweets, enjoying the summer when my friend remarked "so now the traffic starts". Yes, every afternoon there is an increase in vehicles, people going home from work or wherever they spent their day.

I remarked that I thank me every day for planning so well, that I do not have to be a part of them. She: "Aren't you thanking god?" Me: "No, I'm thanking myself, I'm more of a Mammon type".

To that she frowned, until I reminded her that in the last two months she's been on vacation in London and Piemonte, and is soon going to Ticino before being off to the Cote d'Azur outside Nice. Then I made her smile.

I think she might be a closet-Mammon-type.

Bird dramas

In two years my wee ones have gotten their little paws on one bird each, and today they raised their quota with 100%.

This morning, while I was sitting quietly in front of my computer, I suddenly saw something in the corner of my eye. Zetti, walking around proudly in the living room, with a tiny little bird in her mouth. Bitch!

Without panicking, well almost, I rushed to close all the doors to the other rooms. There shall be no half-dead birds in my bed. Then I had to chase her out on the balcony, make her drop her prey and quickly shove it into the neighbours garden. It was unfortunately dead.

Then, in the afternoon, while I was just expecting a guest, being busy preparing glasses and sweets in the kitchen, Zina rushed to the balcony. I was quick enough to close the balcony door, and got out there trying to get her to drop the birdie. Another very small one. Zina is more persistent than her sister, but eventually I succeeded. Turned out the birdie was still alive, but probably scared out of its wits, and with difficulties to get away. Finally it flew out from under the windows into the nearest tree. I was very relieved.

Just after, my guest arrived and after having duly admired the new sofa, we proceeded on to the balcony for our well-deserved drink. It was then she saw it. The wee bird who just got away, was again on the balcony, sitting in my plant, quivering. How stupid is that? You have just survived, escaping the enemy, then come back for more?

Fortunately my friend is much more bird-friendly than I, so she took the shivering wee one into her hands and released it into the garden. A few hours later it had disappeared, so I hope it survived. I'm thinking those were both baby birds, who still haven't learned how to behave in nature. Flying into my balcony, with two cats, how stupid is not that?

Dead pussy

I have an old friend who had a cat. He was always talking about it like it didn't matter. "The cat just moved in" and he was around and sometimes slept in the house.

After a while knowing him (the friend, not the cat), it turned out that the cat was like a family member "he sleeps in my bed" and was cared about more than my friend liked to admit.

Today he died. He lived 17 or 18 years with my friend. It's very sad.

I don't care what you people with kids think, pets can be just as loved and cared about. And thinking about earlier today, much, much, much easier to love :).

An early lunch

Had a friend over today with her Mum who was visiting from far away. I am always interested in meeting new people, and especially ones that are related to friends. I think it's because I'm curious about how others relate to their parents or relatives. Or it could simply be that I like people. Well, most people.

Anyway, the Mum was nice and friendly and easy to get along with. Exactly like I expected, after knowing her daughter quite a few years. And as it turned out, both like wine. And here was I, having prepared lemonade for them with ice and all, standing just there in the fridge waiting. But as a good hostess I had to comply and have a glass (or three) of wine with them. Poor me!

The third guest was less likable, but it did seem he was quite interested in the cat food. A persistent, and frankly, quite loud little monkey I think is an accurate description.

Nevertheless, he's welcome back. Oh, I'm so gonna regret I said that!

Blood

Funny, on Saturday I bought band-aids and today they came to use. I was quietly minding my own business, reading a book, and without realizing it scratched my chin. All of a sudden blood was dripping, and I couldn't understand why.

Turned out I had a spot of some kind, and even though no pain, I scratched too much and it started bleeding. Quite a bit actually.

First I put a big band-aid on, but it looked and felt too ridiculous, so to my delight I found these tiny square band-aids in on of the boxes I bought.

Still, I feel a bit funny walking around with it, although the cats don't seem to mind. I'm still the best belly-scratcher in the world if you ask them.

Marco! Marco!

Was having dinner with my neighbours tonight. There was a lot of talk about lavender. This because earlier in the week we had an offer to replace some lavender plants that died in winter. I won't go further into that, since it's not that interesting.

The food was good though, grill and coleslaw and salad.

And then there was Marco. Across the street there is an elderly couple who has a Marco. Several times a day they stand on the street across our house, shouting for Marco. When Marco doesn't come, they ring a bell. It is obvious that Marco doesn't like bells. I think Marco is clever.

But today I met Marco for the first time. I've only seen him before, running around, but today we got acquainted. I think Marco is lovely.

Hansaplast 20%

I had new shoes on today, going to the parade. Stupid me, never wear new shoes when there's a lot of walking ahead. And as my friend pointed out, I've done it before on the very same parade. Makes him think that I always buy new shoes. I don't.

Once a year I buy new summer shoes, since the quality of them I buy seem to be, well, not that lasting. Personally I think that 29 francs should buy you at least two summers.

So I went to Coop to buy some band-aids, and to my delight it was 20% off if you bought two. And so I did. Now I'm covered for the next two years at least.

Timing

You know, it's pretty funny with people who have kids. Actually not, but they change. When I say lunch-time I mean afternoon like 3 or 4pm, they mean 1 o'clock. Me, I'm lucky if I had breakfast then.

But flexible as I am, brunch it'll be at 2 o'clock. Nothing is like compromizing.

Ok, I didn't mean that, but still. It's worth making an effort for good friends. Even if they have kids.

Zürich pride

As usual, my friend who I see once a year, called me yesterday to remind me of the pride festival today. We went. And although it's very nice to see him, I think maybe the festival is no longer necessary. This year there were less costumes, less challenging people, less of everything. It was more like marching with normal people.

I'm not saying gays and lesbians are not normal, but I think they are now so accepted in the society, that there is no more need for provocation and demonstration.

For example this year Credit Suisse was the main sponsor of the parade. Can there be a more conservative sponsor? Or perhaps CS has just realized that gay people usually have a lot of money to spend? Yes, of course that's the reason.

Anyway, it was nice to catch up with my friend and the sun was shining.

PS. Hadn't seen him in a year. He: "you look good, Botox?". Me: "No, just normal fat".

Cash kinda girl

Yesterday a friend and I were talking about the benefits of having a travel card or not. I realized that mine is about to expire (why cannot SBB/ZVV send a reminder?), so went to the station to extend my card.

First they asked for a new photo, apparently the old one is deleted after 10 years (fair enough, even though the guy behind the desk admitted I did look almost the same :), but this I had anticipated, and so presented another but different old one. Turns out it wasn't valid, since a little furry one had put bite marks on it. As I explained to the cats at home, you do not bite the hand that feeds you!

8 francs later, using the photo machine at the station, I presented four fresh new photos to the guy, who had been nice enough to wait for me. Very nice Swiss guy giving service, he should be stuffed and shown in a museum!

Then it turned out my pay card didn't work! WTF? Then I remembered that there is a weekly limit (which I myself agreed to a long time ago), and that I had withdrawn a heap of money earlier in the week. At this point I felt myself starting to sweat, out of embarrassment. I hate to feel stupid. The guy was still nice "it has happened to me too", and not at all disturbed. I thanked him for his patience and told him I'd be back tomorrow. With cash!

Then I went on to the boat. Finally the nice weather is here, and I was so looking forward to a cruise. This was before I realized the water level was almost up to the bridge, and that the stream was far too strong for my little engine. Scheisse!

But every downside has an up. It's actually not too bad sitting in a boat in the middle of the city, enjoying the sun and sipping a drink. It's like I have my own little floating bar. For free!

Opening times

While walking to the park today I also discovered a bar not too far from my place, open from 6am to 4.30am every day, except for Fridays and Saturdays, when it's open from 6am to 5am. This is indeed useful information.

Park life

Finally summer is here, and I joined a friend going to a park today. Ok, she has two kids but one is a dream-baby, only sleeping and smiling, so I thought, how bad can it be?

And it actually wasn't. Sitting there in a park in the middle of Zürich, in the sun, sipping chilled wine, was very pleasant. And thrifty as I am, I brought my own. Very good thing, since I was told a glass is 9 francs!

Watching all the mothers (and the odd father) running after their kids on the playground. Haha, very nice watching other people work. My favourite pastime.

It was only when I decided to cool my feet in the fountain, and the 3,5 year-old came up to me, offering me a half-rotten cherry "for your cats" it got a bit ugly. I refused, telling her it wasn't proper cat-food and walked away. Then she screamed at the top of her lungs, "Annika, züruckkommen", Annika come back. No way.

Other than that, a very pleasant afternoon. And I got to see the new "Viadukt"-area in Zürich.

The strawberries are here!

I have been stupid enough to buy the strawberries from Spain, that are most of the time available in the food shops. They taste like nothing, and rot in a day.

Today, for the first time this year, there were Swiss/Italian strawberries in the shop, and they actually taste something. Sweet, real strawberry-taste and delicious. And I can recommend putting one of two in a glass of white wine. Gives the extra delish-strawberry taste.

Is summer finally here? Yes, there is hope yet.

It's just not my style

Was kinda hoping friend would be terrified of having a whole fish with eyes and all served on a plate. Turned out she didn't. Well it was a good try.

But when she dissed our painting (the cat painting which my neighbour said she'd pay 200 francs for!) by saying "it's just not my style" I got a bit...miffed. And a second after I realized that's a statement I often use myself with things I do not like.

Ah well, you can't win them all. And she did like the fish.

Mirror mirror on the wall

A friend of mine broke a mirror, actually it didn't quite break into little pieces, but more like cracked.

This spooked her enormously. I really don't understand why, normally she's a quite down-to-earth person. All I heard was "seven years of bad luck" and such. Really?

Anyway, she googled a way to, in her mind, get rid of the bad luck by walking down to our river late at night, throwing the pieces into the water.

I dunno what to say, other than to laugh at her. Which I did.

El Dorado

Having a veggie friend over for dinner tonight. I bet she'll be surprised.

Wrinkly

And old friend, actually he's both older than me and has been a friend for a very long time, told me today he had tried an anti-wrinkle creme that he got as a present. He's not very vain, but I guess like me, do not like to see things go to waste.

So over ten weeks he dutifully applied the creme under his eyes, anxiously awaiting result. I guess you know what happened. Absolutely nothing. Probably would've had a better result with a rubber band.

But it got me thinking. I look at myself in the mirror every morning, of course I do, but I seldom really see. I don't scrutinize myself. I've never had an interest in cosmetics, and very little interest in how I look. I call it natural beauty, but it's probably just laziness and disinterest combined.

Today I did, and I found that I have practically no wrinkles on my forehead. To worry is just not my thing. But what I do have are two "irritation"-wrinkles on the root of my nose, between my eyebrows. That does make sense, since I used to get irritated a lot. Less so today, but I still have a temper.

Of course, it could just be the genes speaking.

Stones

Lately I did guacamole a few times, but the problem is the preparation. Or rather the timing of it. If you do it the day before you risk it going brown and looking very unappetizing, but since it's a bit messy to make, it's nice to have it prepared beforehand.

Now I have learned how to do. Haven't checked it out yet, but learned from a food program that by putting one of the avocado stones into the guacamole, it'll keep it green and fresh. Worth trying.

And I tried to plant two stones in soil, in order to grow them into plants. Haven't succeeded so far, but I blame it on the bad summer. Funny that, all my green plants inhouse grow like hell, and are very happy. I think it's the smoke.

Kid stuff

It's funny with people with kids. When they come to visit, they are accompanied by...well stuff. Paraphernalia in excess. There are clothes, diapers (ok, that I am grateful for), but also toys, books, water bottles (which the kid in question often throws on the floor), crackers (what is it with crackers? all I know is that the remainder is on my floor when they leave), trolleys, blankets and who knows what else.

Plus they never friggin shut up. The older they get, the louder they become it seems.

Nah, now I'm gonna relax on my brand new sofa and enjoy the smell of new leather. Quietly.

New sofa!

Hurray! New sofa in place. Have really missed having somewhere comfy to sit for the last couple of weeks.

Ne fiant abortivum senex

...or... "ut non sit senex in tempore non tuo". I'm not sure google translate can be trusted, but this is what it showed when I tried to say that fuck carme diem, that everybody uses, I am from now on having a new saying. Do not get old before your time.

I realized that this afternoon when I was out, having a good time in my fav place, singing along, watching a small piece of the world, everybody happy and talking to each other. I should get out more, doing just that. Talking to people, enjoying what the world has to offer.

So apart from the above sounding like "abort sex something" I will do just that. Enjoy more, and not get (well, at least not too) old before my time.

Bio eco whatsit

And another thing about buying eco/bio/whatever-friendly to the environment, what about avocados, mangos, oranges, chili and still in Switzerland, what with the bad summer and all, Spanish strawberries and raspberries, isn't that bad for the environment? Transporting these fruits and veggies a long way, and polluting the environment?

Not to mention fish. Here in Switzerland we don't exactly have an ocean. Much of the fish sold here are imported, many from far-away countries. How bad is that for the environment?

But I think these imported especially fruits and veggies are really bad quality. I was buying two avocados today, with the aim of making homemade guacamole, and had to squeeze around 30 of them in order to find two that were semi-soft.

And wine! Yes, wine is made here in Switzerland, but for the bouquet vs price, not even close to what the imported ones can offer.

I am so confused. I wanna be a good person, supporting my local environment, but it's very difficult to be consistent, always doing the right thing. It's again money. If I was a millionaire I could start my own ranch, and be self-supporting. But then I would've a lot of employees, driving to work, polluting the air.

Life is a big uphill travel...

The chicken and the egg

I've been thinking about this egg business, moving over to buy only bio-eggs, but in order to be consequent, I should also only be buying chickens that have been roaming free. They cost an arm and a leg, like 20 francs for one chicken!

I'm not willing to pay that price. This poses a bit of a dilemma. I want to be fair to the chicken, but then I gotta be fair to other animals too, like cows and sheep and stuff. And how am I to know how all these animals I eat yearly are having a good life while they live?

It's exhausting thinking about.

Egg-tracking

Another thing we talked about this evening was how food is produced, and how we like to buy things that are manufactured and grown close to where we live.

Then we found this Migros website, which we immatediately tested, and found my egg! Well, one of the eggs I had bought. And that's all good and reassuring, until I read they have 5,900 chickens. Are they really all roaming around in the fields?

Maybe this should be my next project? Going there and actually see for myself? 'Cause I am skeptical, having 5,900 chickens all moving around in green areas, as free as a bird so to speak?

Really, who can you trust these days?

PS. Migros is still persuing this "clean and green" image, and refuse to sell tobacco and alcohol. However, they did buy Denner a few years ago, and Denner mainly profits on exactly that, cig and alco. My eggs were bought at Denner, and could be tracked via the Migros website. Well, as they say here in Switzerland, money doesn't smell.

Ein bisschen Frieden

Had a friend over for dinner tonight. He is a big fan of the Eurovision, and after dinner he kept on showing me youtube-clips of highlights over the years. Lucky me.

But the dinner was a hit. Ribs, chops, homemade coleslaw and baked potatoes. Cannot think of a better combo.

Also good conversation about money. Savings are the shit, although we differ in opinion how to get there. Also how much to have. But money is just money, friends are...I was gonna say without value...but mean priceless. You cannot buy them. Before I get into more of a web with words...I give you:

Ein bisschen Frieden..

No lift for a while

So the cleaning was done until noon today, since the sofa delivery was to happen between 12 and 17 this afternoon. Guess what? It arrived at five.

And the not so careful guys broke our lift! Admittedly, it's an unusually sensitive lift and he must've come too close to the door while the lift was in motion, but still. And I'm pretty sure he forced part of the door open to get the package out. But not to worry, I have his name, number and company, in case this'll cost us too much.

And I'm impressed over the lift service, they arrived within half an hour of reporting the problem and are now busy trying to mend it. Had to laugh though when he saw the lift and burst out "scheisse". Exactly!

So how do you like my new sofa? Bet it'll look better assembled.

Clean house

Finally all the windows, the frames and the whole flat is in pristine order after hard work put in by both myself and my cleaning help. Well, at least until tomorrow.

Am very happy with new bathroom mat. It's a bit funkier than the old one.

Shopping

Went walking with my neighbour today, she was going shopping and I tagged along. Didn't plan on buying anything. Ha! How stupid was I? Came home with a fab bathroom mat, so even though I have a nice one, this one was even better. Funky and in my colours. Pic later.

She also made me join her in clothing shops, and heureka, I found a pair of shorts that fit me. I was looking for a size 40 (she's a tiny 34 herself, but difficult to hate, too nice), but shop only had 42. Too big she told me, and made me try on a pair of 38's. They fit! Ok, so they were stretch but the description said "normal waist, slight butt and thin thighs" or similar. I like very much.

So now I'm gonna strut around in my slim new shorts, but coming to think of it, I need a top too. Calling neighbour as we speak.

Housework

Now when it is airy in my apartment, due to lack of a sofa, I decided it was time to clean the windows. Do some spring cleaning. Then I realized it was kinda dirty around on the frames too, so even though I have this steamer, it took some time. Actually, I've done a few windows every day. It is sweaty work, which I'm certainly not used to. And don't particularly like.

So I was very pleased when my cleaning lady called in to check whether I needed some help. YES! On Friday we'll do the rest of the windows including all the framework around. Probably should've done that before, but only been living here 3,5 years.

While on the balcony cleaning from the outside I realized there were moss growing in between the tiles. Not only that, but cat hair in droves. They like to roll around out there, and the hair sticks in between, so there was I wearing a glove with a knife in my hand, pulling out weed and hairs and gooey stuff. Yikes.

Sometimes I think rental flats are the shit.

Sold

So when the charity org didn't want my furniture, I had to find another way of getting rid of the sofa and the chair. Ikea wanted 100 francs to remove it, and cheap as I am I didn't want to pay that.

After surfing the net I found a site where you can put an ad for free, and voila! Now I've sold the chair for 25 and the sofa for 100 francs. And the charity org ain't gettin' nothin' of that!

Burned

A neighbour of mine had birthday today. I had agreed to meet up with them this evening. So took my little gift, some cinnamon rolls and a bottle of vino and went there. No answer. Weird.

Turned out they got delayed due to some baby business, but we finally made it. I walked in there hearing "have you got your camera with you, I have something for your blog". Nope, didn't.

Was a grill filled with burned meat. They were planning on grilling, and due to a telephone call forgot all about it. Now they have to deal with a smoke-coloured balcony roof (haha, I have one too, but indoors), and a grill that needs replacing. Just thankful they didn't burn the place down.

And they did get to have cinnamon rolls for dinner.

Funny thing, when I was leaving, the 3.5 year-old didn't want to let go of my wine bottle (I always bring a bottle with a cooling bag around it and so that they do not have to get rid of the empty one bring it back with me), I guess she wanted me to stay. I smell good she said to her Dad, I told her it was smoke and wine aroma. She might be a better person than I've seen so far!

Organ donation

While I was donating blood again today, I noticed a donation broschure. A Swiss one. I have an organ donation card in my wallet since decades, but thought it may prove beneficial to have a Swiss one too. Just in case people here cannot read my mother tongue.

But I did read through it, since I wanted to make sure that no organs of mine are taken while I'm still alive. My friend laughed, but I'm serious, I don't want a band of Eastern European torpedos after me looking to sell my heart or liver on the black market. Mind you, my lungs are probably more suited for student doctors to study. Which is still something I'm considering. Giving my body up for science once I'm dead.

In the meantime, I'm signing ze Swiss donor card. Just in case.

Switzerland is a rich country

I have ordered my new sofa! Am very excited, and as it turns out the "rec"-thingie can be placed on either the right or the left side, and be changed later. So even though I've decided to go left this time, I can change my mind later.

I also decided to not eat at Ikea again. There is something about these meatballs and mashed potatoes in their restaurant that doesn't agree with my stomach. I am glad I live alone, and so should everybody else be if you get my drift.

But it left me with the little problem of getting rid of one sofa and one chair. No place for them once I get my new sofa, and they are if not in mint, so pretty good condition so I thought people would be fighting for them.

First it turns out that nobody in the immediate vicinity has any use for them, nor do they know anybody who does.

The charity organization Pfarrer Sieber answers "Herzlichen Dank für Ihr Angebot. Leider können wir zur Zeit keine weiteren Sachspenden mehr entgegen nehmen, sind wir doch in den letzten Monaten reich beschenkt worden." Interesting. Even the charity org's here has enough of furniture. I am so changing my will.

Somehow I find it a little bit sad that Switzerland is such a wealthy country, that nobody needs anything.

Neighbours

I have a nice neighbour. Actually, I have more nice neighbours, but two in particular I know more than the others. Today I spent some time with the nice one. Actually when leaving I realized we had been talking non-stop for two hours, without ever being bored.

And even though she has a newborn, it didn't bother me one bit. Helps that the infant was sleeping through most of our chatter.

Brought a bottle of vino, since I didn't want to disappoint her. She's used to that. They seldom have wine at home. She had a few half glasses, and giggled "what will my husband say when he comes home?". Probably will guess that Annika was there. It's not exactly a secret that I'm a wine lover in this building.

Like Saturday night. The neighbours above had a party. A loud one. Now, our building is very soundproof and solidly built, but even I could hear it. Not so loud that it bothered me though, I fell asleep without any problems. However, kid family have their bedroom just beneath the party living room. She didn't fall asleep until three in the morning when the music stopped. But the issue was that she first blamed me (told me "I was thinking it was weird after 3,5 years that Annika has a party like that without telling us"). Isn't it typical? I get the blame first. The black sheep, it's me. But I'm happy to oblige. Actually, I kinda thrive on it. It used to be me, and if people still think I'm an it-girl, so be it.

And she has nice bar stools. Was thinking of getting new ones like that myself. Well, that was until I raised my butt from it and left half the thigh skin on it. I was wearing shorts.

Now onto preparing dinner for tonight. More later.

Shopping bags

When I was young plastic shopping bags were free, and some of them are still today. Like shopping bags for clothes and other stuff, but food bags cost.

I saw a consumer program and apparently the shops are making a fortune for selling these plastic bags. I myself always bring a bag to the shop. I bought one for 2 francs, one in Migros and one in Denner, and after several years I still use the same. Always bring them with me. And I even have the blue bags from Ikea and the orange plant bags from Coop, using them every time.

So even if the expert, probably paid by the plastic industry, claimed that plastic was better than paper, I still believe in re-using the same one over and over again.

But ok, using tiny leftover small bars of soap, making them melt into a bigger one, is maybe going over the top. But I cannot help it, I was brought up that way.

And I do believe in saving mother Earth, and at the same time saving money. A win-win as they call it nowadays.

Lefty me?

I am so ambivalent. I checked the measurements for my new sofa, and decided for the 2-seater + the "recamieren" which is the sorta corner long side of the sofa. But I cannot decide which side the rec-something goes on.

Left side, then I more or less permanently block off  the balcony doors there. But since I've never used them in 3,5 years, perhaps not such a bad thing. Plus it gives a rounding corner to a real corner.

Right side, then I would mark the tv/fireplace area off, and give it more of a separate room feeling.

Today, I'm leaning towards the left. Which is a first for me!

Input welcome.

Breaking ze Swiss glass ceiling

You gotta love ze Swiss. One of my neighbours wants to build a glass roof over part of their terrace. This was discussed already in January at the annual meeting, and none of us had any objections. We signed a paper saying so.

Their terrace is facing the side of the building, where nobody would see it anyway, there are bushes covering the space to the next building. Besides, I think any improvement to a building is raising the value of the whole.

But of course they ran into problems. We are four apartments in the building, two having 22% each and two having 28% each. Size matters again.

The majority needs to approve, but since one of the 22% flats is having an agent handling their business, and an authorization couldn't be found, their share didn't count. Then the two flats with a 28% share had only one of the spouses signatures, so only half of them counted.

That left 50% in favour, and 50% unknown. All according to ze Swiss authorities, who scratched their heads, consulted lawyers and came up with a maybe. So now neighbour needs to find the original signatures of us all, make sure the spouses sign and deliver an addendum to the request.

Then of course ze Swiss will take their time in approving, so I expect that we'll maybe see a glass roof sometime next year. At best.

I found my sofa

So went to Ikea today in order to browse and get inspiration, and managed to get out only paying some 50+ francs (and one of the things was 45 francs). Not bad! And it was stuff I really wanted.

But what I fell in love with was a black leather sofa, 3-seated with a side thingie and a separate sorta side cushion. And when the guy told me it was 20% off if I order it two weeks from now (if I have an Ikea family card - which I incidentally have since today) and to top it all off, free delivery, I decided! Yes, too good to pass on.

Unfortunately it turns out the sofa is a tad too long for the space I have allocated, but not to worry, it comes with a 2-seater too. Very comfortable and fitting the style I have in my flat. And long enough to sleep on, should I have more than one overnight guest.

But I did get yelled at. After I finished the first round, paid, and got out, I realized I had more than an hour before I was gonna be picked up, so went for a second round, looking at "my" sofa again and picking up more information. When I passed the cashiers desk with my bag, I was told I wasn't allowed to go through Ikea twice. Even though I offered to show him the receipt. I wanted to say "I was just in there to pick up more information on a fairly pricey piece of furniture you idiot", but refrained from doing so. Nice as I am. Most of the time.

And I ate. Meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. Lovely. 5 francs for 10 meatballs, which is a bargain, but when I realized that a softdrink cost 2.50 (half the price of the meal!) I got a bit irritated. So even though the whole meal incl drink cost me 7.50 I felt cheated. Funny that. And I don't care if it's horsemeat in the balls.

So now I'm gonna have to go back, order my sofa, get the 20% discount and free delivery sorted in a couple of weeks. Exciting times!

Ikea

Going to Ikea tomorrow. Not that I need anything in particular, but want some inspiration. Plus I do like the food in the restaurant there. Will go in the afternoon, hoping that there shall be no kids and their screaming Mums.

Wish me luck!

Clean

My cleaning lady had to cancel due to a private tragedy, which is perfectly understandable. I am just impressed that she had the wits to call me and tell me about it. But there you go, she's like me. A commitment is a commitment, and if you cannot deliver you inform.

But it left me with a dirty apartment, and so I had to act. This morning I was up at the crack of dawn (well, depends on when you think dawn is), grabbing the hoover, the mop, the dusting thingie and whatsit. I even cleaned the toilets!

I feel very proud of myself, and have a sense of accomplishment. I can do it!

But it was exhausting, I have to admit that. And I'm glad I am not a professional cleaner.

My cats are here!

Had some friends over yesterday for a Mexican, and it made me think. Not over the Mexican mind you, but over how people interact with each other. And no, the fizzy wine wasn't Mexican, but oh-so-good.

Now, the man from yesterday is the boyfriend of a really good friend of mine. I have met him maybe ten times over a few years. Yet I know very little about him. And I was thinking whether it's because my friend and I always chat, never stop talking around him, not giving him a chance, or whether he chooses not to share.

Probably a little of both.

But that's ok, as long as my friend is happy. And I am happy too! She brought the painting we did on New Years. Not the Eve, she corrected me, we did it on the 1st of Jan...yes after the 12 o'clock cheering. And I found the perfect place for it! Was going to-and-fro about where to put it, but finally realized that the cat-food place is right for it. Showed it to my own live ones, but they were indifferent. Hmmm.
All we need to do now is to sign it. Picasso, eat your heart out!

Nostalgia

Got an email from my old neighbour in Copenhagen. She had gone back for a nostalgia trip and sent me some pics. Brings me back to the days when we had a pre-drink at my flat, then decided it was too much bother to take the bus, and called for a cab to go into town.

This is where we ended up most of the time. A place which was unpretentious, with live music and a lot of fun. Plus a very goodlooking waiter. The link now suggests there is an outdoor area, which didn't exist back then, and sadly no sign of the goodlooking waiter, but I'm sure it's still good.

Copenhagen where I lived for exactly three years. Yes, it was good times. I can recommend it.

Zürich - my city

Took a walk today, it's beautiful now when all the flowers and trees are blooming.

On the top of the mountain there is a restaurant, with a fab cheese plate. Which I enjoyed tremendously.

A one way ticket to Mars

I read in the news that a voyage to Mars is planned, and that you now can apply to be one of the participants going into space.

As I understand it roughly 10K people have applied, and will be evaluated over a number of months. As many men as women will be allowed. Which all sounds good and equal.

But has anybody ever thought why all these people are applying in the first place? Since it is a ONE WAY TICKET?

They're all ready for the psych ward if you ask me.

Change of personality

I don't know what came over me today, but I've been cleaning. So not like me. Especially not cleaning out the drain in the main shower. Yikes!

Can you imagine the stuff that was in there after using that same shower for 3,5 years? Yes, exactly. It wasn't pretty. I think it was mainly my own hair, wrapped in some grayish gooey, stinking like hell. I used a screwdriver and a pincer to yank it all out of there, and to get the water flowing again.

Then I puked my guts out. Charming.

Then the kitchen got a makeover, not the normal day-to-day cleaning after cooking but properly cleaning all the surfaces and dusting. Ok, this is something I do from time to time, but still.

And now I'm busy taking out all the shelves from the fridge and cleaning them with washing liquid, like scrubbing. Not like they were really dirty, but I guess it was a year ago or so I did it last. And I have thrown away old stuff, you know cans and shit that clogs up the fridge with time. It's now very tidy and I can see exactly what is in there.

Me a cleaner? Who would've thought.

Baby blog

My neighbours have a new baby. It's nothing like the last one, who was attention-seeking (still is..."Annika, come on the balcony with me, look at this (turned out to be a dead insect), bla-bla-bla"). This new one is lovely. Quiet, gurgling, smiling, and sleeping in a crowd that is loud.

If I would have chosen to have kids, this one would be it. Unfortunately I've heard you cannot give'm back if you don't like'm.

And she has a blog.

Size does matter

Was having a fag on the neighbours terrace, and I must say, they could've chosen a bigger table. 80m2 of terrace, and this is all they could come up with?
Fortunately one of the new neighbours is a judge-like, like she clerks for one of the higher courts in Switzerland, and judges in courts dealing with domestic stuff. Excellent!

So when I am right, and a neighbour wrong, she can judge. And it's all up to who bribes the most. Yes?

The full Monty

So, finally after five months living in "my" house the new neighbours had a housewarming. Both of them.

Everybody showed up. No wonder, since we all were very curious about how they live, and none of us are prone to say no to a free meal. And free drinks.

And upon my request we were invited to see every room in the flats. The full Monty. And the older I get, the more I read into how people choose to live. The things they have surrounding them, and the design they prefer. Indeed a sign I'm getting hmmmm more mature.

But it's funny, the party started at 4pm and I arrived as one of the last 10 minutes later, and it was mayhem. Maybe there's something to be said about dust-collecting carpets (and also absorbing sound) 'cause it was loud. But good loud if you know what I mean. And it wasn't like any neighbour was complaining, since they were all there.

And it was nice to see that they adore cats!

Officers but no gentlemen

Here in Switzerland we have an army. Not a navy mind you, that would be an oxymoron having no seas.

Tonight I went for a few drinks in my usual place, and to my surprise a few men wearing army uniforms were going for it, like their life depended on it. Of course I'm referring to dancing.

But it's good to know, should Switzerland get attacked, that at least the officers can dance.

How I know they weren't gentlemen? One of them grabbed the ass of the woman he was dancing with.

Hairwash

I wash my hair every three days. I have done so all my life, up until a few years ago when I started to test. I stretched to four days, and even five days once, but then I felt a bit eek so stopped.

But what I noticed is that the hair, at least my hair, is much more cooperative when a bit dirty. Not that I use spray or mousse or anything to enhance it, but it lays there where I combed it.

Makes me remember my Dad, when he had spent three weeks in the army doing a training, and the delight he felt when telling me how dirty he was, 'cause he knew how disgusting I found that.

I guess he had a point. Nowadays we wash and pimp ourselves far too much. We wash away the protective fat, and use fake smells/aromas to feel good. I believe in water and soap, and the drawer I have in the bathroom still filled with perfume from up to ten years ago is the proof.

Gimme a smelly man anytime. One that smells of fresh sweat, and is for real.

Temperature

When I bought the plants for the balcony this week I was told that some plants cannot survive a temperature below 5°C. No probs I thought, while I got out some towels just to be sure.

When checking the temperature for tonight one website told me it would be 0° tonight. Bullshit. It is now 18.7°C on my balcony, and there is no risk for zero at night.

Every time I check a website for weather, it is almost always wrong. I should've gotten an education for a meteorologist. Being wrong most of the time and still get paid, yes why didn't I do that?

Fleischkäse

Most of the time the name of food gives you an indication what it consists of, like meat, fish, pasta or potatoes. Not so much with "fleischkäse", which literally translates into "meat-cheese". Trust me, there is no trace of cheese in fleischkäse. Which disappointed me sorely when I first came across it. I love cheese.

So it took me many years before I started to like it. Had it not been for the false declaration of contents, I probably would've eaten it long before.

But nowadays, thru media, I have understood that you can never be sure of the meat you buy. It can consist of any other mammal that you thought. Labelling is one thing, true content another. And all companies are blaming somebody else.

I might have to ask the neighbours with the garden below my balcony, to buy a pig, a sheep and a cow and to arrange for a pond with fish. But then I would probably be so attached to the animals, I couldn't see them killed.

However you turn, your bottom is at your back. If you get my drift.

High waist please

My search for shorts went on today. It took me all the way into town to H&M. And guess what? All the shorts are low-waist with no way of hiding the Michelin-tyre that seems to have parked itself on my belly. The other option were jeans-shorts, all looking like they'd been worn for 20 years, and if I'm gonna buy jeans I'd like to wear and tear them down myself thank you very much.

This is all very disappointing, so disappointing I had to spend the whole afternoon with a neighbour on her terrace drinking wine and eating icecream, while improving on my tan.

Why does life have to be so difficult?

Colours on the balcony

A day of exes

Today in the city I spotted one of my exes. It was weird. I hadn't seen him for years. But he looked the same. I did try to wave, but he didn't see me, and he was with a woman so I refrained from jumping in front of him, shouting "I'm back!".

Then on telly this evening I saw a fling I had decades ago. To be honest I am not sure it was him, since he looked old, (ok considering it was about 30 years ago we met I might have aged a wrinkle or two too) but I do remember the surname and the business he was in, so either it was a brother or him. He was funny back then. We met in Spain. He carried me on his arms. Funny the things you remember.

All you need is a trigger. Maybe I should write a book, instead of wasting my time blogging?
