Me the bartender II

Sorry but there is something wrong with the upload of pics, since the upgrade of explorer, so pics come alone, then the text.

Was helping out feeding poor people today. According to my information 65% are druggies, some 25% has some sort of psychological issue. The rest has unknown problems, but everybody is welcome.

My job as a volunteer was to stand behind the bar, welcome the people and serve them drinks. Which was a bit weird for me, since no alcohol was allowed. It was coffee, chocolate, tea, mineral water or syrup. Me: "what would you like to drink?" One of the guests: "gin and tonic". Haha.

The meal consisted of chicken, polenta and salad and was quite tasty. Felt a bit bad in the end, since I had a portion and the last few guys didn't get any meat. Like I took food from the homeless.

And then there were sweets. Just before closing time at Migros, they went there and got the leftovers to be served as a dessert. Nice of Migros not to throw it away.

Most of the guests were very nice and polite, but of course there were a few who didn't exactly walk straight. Never felt threatened though. And the guys working there were keeping an eye out I'm sure.

The staff consisted of two fulltime workers plus a kitchen chef, and then there were two young guys who had chosen to work for non-profit instead of going to jail for refusing to make the military service. Good for them!

Did you notice on the pic that the toilet door cannot close? It's to prevent people from shooting up in there. I went once before the guests arrived, and in the end chose to rush home. I was bursting, but no way was I gonna use the toilet after all these people had been in there.

Today we served 68 meals, and I reckon almost a third of them were women. I can only try to imagine what stories these people can tell.

But strange as it sounds, I had fun. The staff were good and warmhearted people, and held no judgement against the guests. I might have to work a little on that.

So think I definitely will be going back. I was told I was welcome anytime, which probably means I did something right!
