Reverse parking

I just don't understand why they make you do reverse parking. Who in their right mind would park a boat with the friggin 80 horsepowers huge engine pointing towards the bridge? The engine prevents you from going close to the bridge, and then you won't be able to step onto the bridge. Why, why, why? But apparently this is one of the exercises you have to perform in order to get the license. I just cannot think of one good reason for it...
