It's just not my style

Was kinda hoping friend would be terrified of having a whole fish with eyes and all served on a plate. Turned out she didn't. Well it was a good try.

But when she dissed our painting (the cat painting which my neighbour said she'd pay 200 francs for!) by saying "it's just not my style" I got a bit...miffed. And a second after I realized that's a statement I often use myself with things I do not like.

Ah well, you can't win them all. And she did like the fish.

Mirror mirror on the wall

A friend of mine broke a mirror, actually it didn't quite break into little pieces, but more like cracked.

This spooked her enormously. I really don't understand why, normally she's a quite down-to-earth person. All I heard was "seven years of bad luck" and such. Really?

Anyway, she googled a way to, in her mind, get rid of the bad luck by walking down to our river late at night, throwing the pieces into the water.

I dunno what to say, other than to laugh at her. Which I did.

El Dorado

Having a veggie friend over for dinner tonight. I bet she'll be surprised.

Wrinkly

And old friend, actually he's both older than me and has been a friend for a very long time, told me today he had tried an anti-wrinkle creme that he got as a present. He's not very vain, but I guess like me, do not like to see things go to waste.

So over ten weeks he dutifully applied the creme under his eyes, anxiously awaiting result. I guess you know what happened. Absolutely nothing. Probably would've had a better result with a rubber band.

But it got me thinking. I look at myself in the mirror every morning, of course I do, but I seldom really see. I don't scrutinize myself. I've never had an interest in cosmetics, and very little interest in how I look. I call it natural beauty, but it's probably just laziness and disinterest combined.

Today I did, and I found that I have practically no wrinkles on my forehead. To worry is just not my thing. But what I do have are two "irritation"-wrinkles on the root of my nose, between my eyebrows. That does make sense, since I used to get irritated a lot. Less so today, but I still have a temper.

Of course, it could just be the genes speaking.

Stones

Lately I did guacamole a few times, but the problem is the preparation. Or rather the timing of it. If you do it the day before you risk it going brown and looking very unappetizing, but since it's a bit messy to make, it's nice to have it prepared beforehand.

Now I have learned how to do. Haven't checked it out yet, but learned from a food program that by putting one of the avocado stones into the guacamole, it'll keep it green and fresh. Worth trying.

And I tried to plant two stones in soil, in order to grow them into plants. Haven't succeeded so far, but I blame it on the bad summer. Funny that, all my green plants inhouse grow like hell, and are very happy. I think it's the smoke.

Kid stuff

It's funny with people with kids. When they come to visit, they are accompanied by...well stuff. Paraphernalia in excess. There are clothes, diapers (ok, that I am grateful for), but also toys, books, water bottles (which the kid in question often throws on the floor), crackers (what is it with crackers? all I know is that the remainder is on my floor when they leave), trolleys, blankets and who knows what else.

Plus they never friggin shut up. The older they get, the louder they become it seems.

Nah, now I'm gonna relax on my brand new sofa and enjoy the smell of new leather. Quietly.

New sofa!

Hurray! New sofa in place. Have really missed having somewhere comfy to sit for the last couple of weeks.

Ne fiant abortivum senex

...or... "ut non sit senex in tempore non tuo". I'm not sure google translate can be trusted, but this is what it showed when I tried to say that fuck carme diem, that everybody uses, I am from now on having a new saying. Do not get old before your time.

I realized that this afternoon when I was out, having a good time in my fav place, singing along, watching a small piece of the world, everybody happy and talking to each other. I should get out more, doing just that. Talking to people, enjoying what the world has to offer.

So apart from the above sounding like "abort sex something" I will do just that. Enjoy more, and not get (well, at least not too) old before my time.

Bio eco whatsit

And another thing about buying eco/bio/whatever-friendly to the environment, what about avocados, mangos, oranges, chili and still in Switzerland, what with the bad summer and all, Spanish strawberries and raspberries, isn't that bad for the environment? Transporting these fruits and veggies a long way, and polluting the environment?

Not to mention fish. Here in Switzerland we don't exactly have an ocean. Much of the fish sold here are imported, many from far-away countries. How bad is that for the environment?

But I think these imported especially fruits and veggies are really bad quality. I was buying two avocados today, with the aim of making homemade guacamole, and had to squeeze around 30 of them in order to find two that were semi-soft.

And wine! Yes, wine is made here in Switzerland, but for the bouquet vs price, not even close to what the imported ones can offer.

I am so confused. I wanna be a good person, supporting my local environment, but it's very difficult to be consistent, always doing the right thing. It's again money. If I was a millionaire I could start my own ranch, and be self-supporting. But then I would've a lot of employees, driving to work, polluting the air.

Life is a big uphill travel...

The chicken and the egg

I've been thinking about this egg business, moving over to buy only bio-eggs, but in order to be consequent, I should also only be buying chickens that have been roaming free. They cost an arm and a leg, like 20 francs for one chicken!

I'm not willing to pay that price. This poses a bit of a dilemma. I want to be fair to the chicken, but then I gotta be fair to other animals too, like cows and sheep and stuff. And how am I to know how all these animals I eat yearly are having a good life while they live?

It's exhausting thinking about.

Egg-tracking

Another thing we talked about this evening was how food is produced, and how we like to buy things that are manufactured and grown close to where we live.

Then we found this Migros website, which we immatediately tested, and found my egg! Well, one of the eggs I had bought. And that's all good and reassuring, until I read they have 5,900 chickens. Are they really all roaming around in the fields?

Maybe this should be my next project? Going there and actually see for myself? 'Cause I am skeptical, having 5,900 chickens all moving around in green areas, as free as a bird so to speak?

Really, who can you trust these days?

PS. Migros is still persuing this "clean and green" image, and refuse to sell tobacco and alcohol. However, they did buy Denner a few years ago, and Denner mainly profits on exactly that, cig and alco. My eggs were bought at Denner, and could be tracked via the Migros website. Well, as they say here in Switzerland, money doesn't smell.

Ein bisschen Frieden

Had a friend over for dinner tonight. He is a big fan of the Eurovision, and after dinner he kept on showing me youtube-clips of highlights over the years. Lucky me.

But the dinner was a hit. Ribs, chops, homemade coleslaw and baked potatoes. Cannot think of a better combo.

Also good conversation about money. Savings are the shit, although we differ in opinion how to get there. Also how much to have. But money is just money, friends are...I was gonna say without value...but mean priceless. You cannot buy them. Before I get into more of a web with words...I give you:

Ein bisschen Frieden..

No lift for a while

So the cleaning was done until noon today, since the sofa delivery was to happen between 12 and 17 this afternoon. Guess what? It arrived at five.

And the not so careful guys broke our lift! Admittedly, it's an unusually sensitive lift and he must've come too close to the door while the lift was in motion, but still. And I'm pretty sure he forced part of the door open to get the package out. But not to worry, I have his name, number and company, in case this'll cost us too much.

And I'm impressed over the lift service, they arrived within half an hour of reporting the problem and are now busy trying to mend it. Had to laugh though when he saw the lift and burst out "scheisse". Exactly!

So how do you like my new sofa? Bet it'll look better assembled.

Clean house

Finally all the windows, the frames and the whole flat is in pristine order after hard work put in by both myself and my cleaning help. Well, at least until tomorrow.

Am very happy with new bathroom mat. It's a bit funkier than the old one.

Shopping

Went walking with my neighbour today, she was going shopping and I tagged along. Didn't plan on buying anything. Ha! How stupid was I? Came home with a fab bathroom mat, so even though I have a nice one, this one was even better. Funky and in my colours. Pic later.

She also made me join her in clothing shops, and heureka, I found a pair of shorts that fit me. I was looking for a size 40 (she's a tiny 34 herself, but difficult to hate, too nice), but shop only had 42. Too big she told me, and made me try on a pair of 38's. They fit! Ok, so they were stretch but the description said "normal waist, slight butt and thin thighs" or similar. I like very much.

So now I'm gonna strut around in my slim new shorts, but coming to think of it, I need a top too. Calling neighbour as we speak.

Housework

Now when it is airy in my apartment, due to lack of a sofa, I decided it was time to clean the windows. Do some spring cleaning. Then I realized it was kinda dirty around on the frames too, so even though I have this steamer, it took some time. Actually, I've done a few windows every day. It is sweaty work, which I'm certainly not used to. And don't particularly like.

So I was very pleased when my cleaning lady called in to check whether I needed some help. YES! On Friday we'll do the rest of the windows including all the framework around. Probably should've done that before, but only been living here 3,5 years.

While on the balcony cleaning from the outside I realized there were moss growing in between the tiles. Not only that, but cat hair in droves. They like to roll around out there, and the hair sticks in between, so there was I wearing a glove with a knife in my hand, pulling out weed and hairs and gooey stuff. Yikes.

Sometimes I think rental flats are the shit.

Sold

So when the charity org didn't want my furniture, I had to find another way of getting rid of the sofa and the chair. Ikea wanted 100 francs to remove it, and cheap as I am I didn't want to pay that.

After surfing the net I found a site where you can put an ad for free, and voila! Now I've sold the chair for 25 and the sofa for 100 francs. And the charity org ain't gettin' nothin' of that!

Burned

A neighbour of mine had birthday today. I had agreed to meet up with them this evening. So took my little gift, some cinnamon rolls and a bottle of vino and went there. No answer. Weird.

Turned out they got delayed due to some baby business, but we finally made it. I walked in there hearing "have you got your camera with you, I have something for your blog". Nope, didn't.

Was a grill filled with burned meat. They were planning on grilling, and due to a telephone call forgot all about it. Now they have to deal with a smoke-coloured balcony roof (haha, I have one too, but indoors), and a grill that needs replacing. Just thankful they didn't burn the place down.

And they did get to have cinnamon rolls for dinner.

Funny thing, when I was leaving, the 3.5 year-old didn't want to let go of my wine bottle (I always bring a bottle with a cooling bag around it and so that they do not have to get rid of the empty one bring it back with me), I guess she wanted me to stay. I smell good she said to her Dad, I told her it was smoke and wine aroma. She might be a better person than I've seen so far!

Organ donation

While I was donating blood again today, I noticed a donation broschure. A Swiss one. I have an organ donation card in my wallet since decades, but thought it may prove beneficial to have a Swiss one too. Just in case people here cannot read my mother tongue.

But I did read through it, since I wanted to make sure that no organs of mine are taken while I'm still alive. My friend laughed, but I'm serious, I don't want a band of Eastern European torpedos after me looking to sell my heart or liver on the black market. Mind you, my lungs are probably more suited for student doctors to study. Which is still something I'm considering. Giving my body up for science once I'm dead.

In the meantime, I'm signing ze Swiss donor card. Just in case.

Switzerland is a rich country

I have ordered my new sofa! Am very excited, and as it turns out the "rec"-thingie can be placed on either the right or the left side, and be changed later. So even though I've decided to go left this time, I can change my mind later.

I also decided to not eat at Ikea again. There is something about these meatballs and mashed potatoes in their restaurant that doesn't agree with my stomach. I am glad I live alone, and so should everybody else be if you get my drift.

But it left me with the little problem of getting rid of one sofa and one chair. No place for them once I get my new sofa, and they are if not in mint, so pretty good condition so I thought people would be fighting for them.

First it turns out that nobody in the immediate vicinity has any use for them, nor do they know anybody who does.

The charity organization Pfarrer Sieber answers "Herzlichen Dank für Ihr Angebot. Leider können wir zur Zeit keine weiteren Sachspenden mehr entgegen nehmen, sind wir doch in den letzten Monaten reich beschenkt worden." Interesting. Even the charity org's here has enough of furniture. I am so changing my will.

Somehow I find it a little bit sad that Switzerland is such a wealthy country, that nobody needs anything.

Neighbours

I have a nice neighbour. Actually, I have more nice neighbours, but two in particular I know more than the others. Today I spent some time with the nice one. Actually when leaving I realized we had been talking non-stop for two hours, without ever being bored.

And even though she has a newborn, it didn't bother me one bit. Helps that the infant was sleeping through most of our chatter.

Brought a bottle of vino, since I didn't want to disappoint her. She's used to that. They seldom have wine at home. She had a few half glasses, and giggled "what will my husband say when he comes home?". Probably will guess that Annika was there. It's not exactly a secret that I'm a wine lover in this building.

Like Saturday night. The neighbours above had a party. A loud one. Now, our building is very soundproof and solidly built, but even I could hear it. Not so loud that it bothered me though, I fell asleep without any problems. However, kid family have their bedroom just beneath the party living room. She didn't fall asleep until three in the morning when the music stopped. But the issue was that she first blamed me (told me "I was thinking it was weird after 3,5 years that Annika has a party like that without telling us"). Isn't it typical? I get the blame first. The black sheep, it's me. But I'm happy to oblige. Actually, I kinda thrive on it. It used to be me, and if people still think I'm an it-girl, so be it.

And she has nice bar stools. Was thinking of getting new ones like that myself. Well, that was until I raised my butt from it and left half the thigh skin on it. I was wearing shorts.

Now onto preparing dinner for tonight. More later.

Shopping bags

When I was young plastic shopping bags were free, and some of them are still today. Like shopping bags for clothes and other stuff, but food bags cost.

I saw a consumer program and apparently the shops are making a fortune for selling these plastic bags. I myself always bring a bag to the shop. I bought one for 2 francs, one in Migros and one in Denner, and after several years I still use the same. Always bring them with me. And I even have the blue bags from Ikea and the orange plant bags from Coop, using them every time.

So even if the expert, probably paid by the plastic industry, claimed that plastic was better than paper, I still believe in re-using the same one over and over again.

But ok, using tiny leftover small bars of soap, making them melt into a bigger one, is maybe going over the top. But I cannot help it, I was brought up that way.

And I do believe in saving mother Earth, and at the same time saving money. A win-win as they call it nowadays.

Lefty me?

I am so ambivalent. I checked the measurements for my new sofa, and decided for the 2-seater + the "recamieren" which is the sorta corner long side of the sofa. But I cannot decide which side the rec-something goes on.

Left side, then I more or less permanently block off  the balcony doors there. But since I've never used them in 3,5 years, perhaps not such a bad thing. Plus it gives a rounding corner to a real corner.

Right side, then I would mark the tv/fireplace area off, and give it more of a separate room feeling.

Today, I'm leaning towards the left. Which is a first for me!

Input welcome.

Breaking ze Swiss glass ceiling

You gotta love ze Swiss. One of my neighbours wants to build a glass roof over part of their terrace. This was discussed already in January at the annual meeting, and none of us had any objections. We signed a paper saying so.

Their terrace is facing the side of the building, where nobody would see it anyway, there are bushes covering the space to the next building. Besides, I think any improvement to a building is raising the value of the whole.

But of course they ran into problems. We are four apartments in the building, two having 22% each and two having 28% each. Size matters again.

The majority needs to approve, but since one of the 22% flats is having an agent handling their business, and an authorization couldn't be found, their share didn't count. Then the two flats with a 28% share had only one of the spouses signatures, so only half of them counted.

That left 50% in favour, and 50% unknown. All according to ze Swiss authorities, who scratched their heads, consulted lawyers and came up with a maybe. So now neighbour needs to find the original signatures of us all, make sure the spouses sign and deliver an addendum to the request.

Then of course ze Swiss will take their time in approving, so I expect that we'll maybe see a glass roof sometime next year. At best.
